Seanachie Nights-Irish Wonder Tales!

Seanachie Nights, a series of spoken word/musical performances from Celtic and British culture, will feature host Lynne Cullen telling Irish Wonder Tales, on Monday, July 20, from 7:00-9:00pm at Bull Feeney’s Irish Pub/Restaurant on 375 Fore Street in Portland, Maine (www.bullfeenys.com). Admission free; $8 suggested donation.

In ‘The Fisherman of Kinsale and the Hag of the Sea,’ a poor fisherman sells his oldest son to a mysterious woman in exchange for success. The son embarks on a series of adventures that are romantic, frightening, and hilarious.
‘Sean Palmer’s Voyage to America with the Fairies’ tells the tale of a rural Irishman who goes out for tobacco, and is swept away on a fantastic journey. This 19th century folktale reflects the longing of the Irish to see their loved ones who took ship for America.
Lynne will tell these and other stories, enlivened with Irish songs, and tunes on the concertina.

According to British storyteller Ben Haggarty, “‘Wonder Tales’ is the preferred term for what were once known as Fairy Tales. These involve wondrous things and marvels such as speaking animals, magical objects, the power of wishes, and spirit helpers such as genii and fairy godmothers. Their distinctive structures tend to open with ‘Once upon a time’ or a similar ritual utterance; they often have a crisis near the beginning and then someone has to set out on a journey to resolve it.”
Lynne Cullen is a storyteller, artist, playwright and musician, who trained as a storyteller in England. She is the creator of Seanachie Nights.
