The Artist community of Portland Maine

Star Support”

Saturday June 5th,2010

Join performing artists of all genres for a day-long event to benefit the North Star Music Café on 225 Congress Street, Portland.

The North Star Music Cafe is always there to help the Arts community. Now is the time for the Artistic Stars of Maine to shine bright for the
North Star!

When times are hard, it is nice to sit and listen to music, look at art, and use free wifi. But just because it looks busy at the North Star
does not mean they are always covering costs. It is the revenue from
food and drinks that pays their bills. The artists receive the door
donations, so if you listen without buying a meal or a drink, the
North Star makes nothing.

Star Support offers an opportunity for the community to view fine art, indulge in the
culinary arts, and witness some of Portland's most talented
performing artists. This event will have a variety of performances
and activities throughout the day to raise money and awareness for
this great venue that has done so much to support the arts community.
This is our turn to give back.

Star Support”

An evening of Star Talent

7pm -9pm

$10 donation at the door

Event history:

In March, after the Moose Herd for Haiti concert, Bill Hinderer and Vernon Cox talked with Kim Anderson about doing a concert with other
artists to raise money for the North Star Music Café. At that bleak
winter time, the sustainability of the venue was of deep concern to
all of us. Winter is usually a difficult time. But in this economy,
it was difficult for Kim to meet her obligations.

It was decided to create an annual event in the summer when business is better to help sustain the North Star throughout the year.

Our vision for this all-day event is to offer a multiple genre program that encompasses all the artforms that enjoy the services of our
North Star Music Café.

Sponsors Wanted

If You are an individual artist or group;

If you are a patron of the North Star Music Café;

If you are a food or beverage vendor,

and you would like to help sponsor an activity or performance during “Star
will gladly display your name in our web announcements.

Meanwhile, you all can help by eating at, or donating to, the North Star. (There is a donation button on the cash register. Let them know that is
where your change should go.)

(Will E Find-it) and Learnin' Vernon
the teller of Legends, Lore, and a whole lot more.

“A Twisted Talent Show”
Saturday June 5th,2010
from 3:30 pm to 5pm
North Star Music Cafe'

Join Host Willey Phinedit (Find-It) for a new Twist on a Talent show.
Okay you local Glocals here is your chance to perform at the first “Twisted Talent Show” to benefit the North Star Music Cafe'.

This is the first Talent show where votes can and will be bought. Yes you can pay off the judges. This is how it will work. You can tell a poem, story or joke, juggle hats, play spoons, sing, burp or toe tap a song.

You can perform any talent traditional or twisted as long as you observe and obey these simple guidelines:

The Talent must be appropriate for Family audiences of 10yo and up.

Your twisted talent should not degrade, humiliate or intimidate any individual or groups of individuals.

You must be in full control of your talent. Your Talent must not be a physical risk to our audience. ( No juggling Knives or Venomus snakes will be allowed.)

Your Host for the “Twisted Talent Show” will be Un-Registerd Maine Willey Phinedit and he will interrupt any performance that endangers the emotional or Physical well being of the audience. You will get one (and only one) warning before he asks you to leave the stage area. If you go over your time be prepared to pay $5.00 a minute up to 10 minute when you will be removed by the authorities!

To participate as a Twisted talent please register before June 5th at 2pm.
(Register Early because Saturday may be filled when you arrive. After all who knows how much Twisted Talent there is in southern Maine.)

You have up to 10 minutes to perform your Talent. However to register you must pay the Judges (Willey and his Cronies) $5.00 for every minute you will perform.
A 5 minute talent will cost you $25.00 to register and if you use the full 10 minutes it would cost $50.00. You can ask friends and family to sponsor your act or pay it all your self.

The judges can be bought by the audience as well from the contestants so please bring your friends and family. (or leave them at home and just bring their money!)
Any money donated in your name may count toward your Twisted Talent judgement.

Prize Certificates will be awarded for:
(Yes certificates! I would love to give other tokens of our appreciation but all money goes to the North Stars' “Star Support”. If you have a gift or service to donate toward the Twisted Talent show pleas e-mail and he will gladly award it in your honor.)

Okay...I am going to pull together a 45 minute set of musicians, dancers, poets, etc. between 7 and 9.

Comment by Vernon L. Cox on April 29, 2010 at 12:41pm
Because seating is limited and many folks have said they would still like to donate though they cant be there on the 5th. I have thought of a way folks could do both.
If a family, buisness or indivdual donates $25 or more we could have local teen and adult Artsits create a Unique Star which would have the donors name on it. We could post these Stars as soon as the donation is recieved so for the next month folks will see the donors name and we all can get an idea of the emotional, artistic, and financial support the Commnunity is outpouring toward the North Star.

Any Artists intersted in helping with this type of fund raiser?
Please keep in mind we want to bring in enough extra revenue to get the North Star through another winter until we could do this again next June!

The old Fort George in Castine, Maine

It all started years son and brother went to castine and fort George with our metal detectors to see if we could find some thing of interest. after scanning for a while we got a real strong reading so started to dig in that spot. we went real deep and finally found some iron straps and a wooden container, in side was some bones. We quickly covered them up and refilled the hole so no one would ever know that we had been digging there. While we were digging a couple from Mass. came by and…See More

Sharing the Fire

I am just back from our New England Storytelling regional conference "Sharing the Fire".  My storytelling fire is renewed, and I am eager to share new tales and new insights.I will be beginning to teach the Readers' Theatre II course for Downeast Senior College this coming Monday: yet another way to share life changing stories. In addition, I just got the acceptance of my proposal to reprise that course for Acadia Senior College this Fall. Too much laughter in one place can be addictive, I…See More
